HOW TO HANG ART ON YOUR WALL.

Updated: May 18, 2021

Wall art is truly a dynamic interior décor tool. It's like the best friend you call when you need a little help out of a tight spot. Wall art is that to dead, open spaces of wall that seem to have no purpose, reason or rhyme.

Think long narrow hallways, large walls behind a sofa and the end of a passage. All these seem to be purposeless... and that's when wall art comes along and creates beauty out of empty space.

The thing about wall art, however, is making sure it's grouped together in the right way and at the right height to make sure that it's pleasing to the eye, comfortable to look at and makes the best of the space available. It's rather easy for the wrong size art to get lost on a big wall, or for it to overpower the space there is. Worse still is art at the wrong height leaving it disjointed from what it's trying to achieve. Let's not even mention when its skew...

That's why I've written this how-to... to help you confidently hang your most precious photographs and art in a way that makes them stand out and of course compliment your décor.

It's clear that art can be used in a number of places but most of the time it's above the sofa that is generally standing against the longest wall in the room or above a serve. For today we'll use hanging art above a sofa as an example.

Top Tip: A Single piece of art should be hung at eye level, roughly 150cm from the centre of the art to the floor.

When we hang art above a sofa, which can be anything from oil paintings and family portraits to abstract sculptures, we use a general rule that art should not take up more that two-thirds of the width of the sofa. It should also be between 10cm and 15cm above the back of the sofa. If you're spacing two or more of the same portraits next to each other, then the space between each portrait should be the width of the frame. For example, if the frame is 10cm wide, then the space between should be 10cm wide.

Paint the wall an accent colour to make your art pop and draw the eye's attention.

The best way to demonstrate these tips is by diagram so we've attached them here. Don't stop reading though as we have some more ideas of what to hang below!

What can you put up as art instead of portraits? Here are some ideas!

1) A grid of 4 or more prints or portraits.

2) A large, beautifully framed mirror.

3) A group of different sized prints.

4) One large painting.

5) A set of identical mirrors or a round mirror.

6) A mirror combined with a pair of prints.

7) A gallery of your favourites grouped together in a square or rectangle.
